Mosquitoes are known vectors of diseases such as West Nile Virus, Malaria, dengue fever, and most recently, the Zika Virus. This mosquito disease transmission poses a significant threat to public health, especially as Zika has spread to the United States through travel. Individuals who visit regions where the Zika virus is prevalent often contract the virus and unknowingly return it to their home country. According to the CDC, there have been 107 travel-associated Zika virus disease cases reported in the United States so far. 

The World Health Organization has declared the Zika Virus a global public health emergency, with notable outbreaks in the USA, Africa, Asia, and the Pacific. In South Florida, health officials have confirmed local Zika transmission cases caused by local mosquitoes. These are the first known instances of the virus being transmitted by mosquitoes within the US.

As of July 2016, Florida has reported 386 cases of Zika, which includes 55 pregnant women. The counties with the highest numbers of cases are Dade (99) and Broward (55). 

The Zika virus can lead to severe neurological and autoimmune complications, making it particularly dangerous for pregnant women, as it can result in babies being born with microcephaly. Common symptoms are usually mild and include rash, red eyes, muscle and joint pain, headaches, and fever.

Currently, there is no vaccine or treatment available, making this a serious issue in South Florida.
